Features

  • Constructed from lightweight PERTEX® SHIELD 2.5 layer fabric.
  • A 40 Denier recycled nylon ripstop fabric face for durability, super-thin waterproof and breathable polyurethane membrane, coated with a grey backer (inside layer), finished with a non-flurocarbon water-repellent coating to prevent the ripstop fabric showing wet patches (even though water would never penetrate the membrane).
  • Technical tailoring around the arms to prevent arm lift raising the lower hem while reaching high.
  • Pivot hood designed to fit perfectly around your face to prevent wind and rain blowing around your ears with single rear pull system.
  • Chest pocket with covered YKK matte AquaGuard® NATULON® zip.
  • Ergonomic lightweight zip pullers for ease of use when wearing gloves or mittens.
  • Adjustable hem with cinchable drawcord.
  • Fewer seams reduce overall weight and improves breathability.
  • Athletic cut – not baggy like some jackets but neither is it tight on the hips or narrow. Hits somewhere in the middle.
  • Reflective elements on front, back and arms.

Pros

  • Light – at 208g for women and 237g men's, a thoroughly lightweight all weather jacket
  • Breathable – The fabric is breathable and the clever design requires fewer seams, meaning less taping, making the jacket lighter and a bit more breathable than its predecessor (you can’t make a taped seam breathable)
  • Waterproof – featuring a 40 Denier PERTEX® SHIELD fabric with a fully seam-taped construction and 2.5 layer construction
  • Adjustable hood – with flexible Pivot 1 hood adjusts the aperture and space around the crown through a sinlge pull bungee at the back. Satisfies event safety requirements
  • Adjustable hem and ealsticated cuffs – the hem can be cinched in with a bungee cord. The cuffs protect the back of your hands with a slight lip, the inside is elasticated
  • Water-resistant zips – YKK lightweight AquaGuard®NATULON® full length zip that is highly water resistant
  • Storage – for essential items, one fully waterproof chest pocket.

Cons(iderations)

  • Just the one pocket. If you like hand warmer pockets consider the Janji Rainrunner Pack jacket.
  • No vents across the back (safer for running in the hills when the wind and rain can drive horizontally and get up any vents). If you easily overheat you may prefer the Janji Rainrunner.

In Testing

  • Has kept me nicely dry but never clammy which I'd been concerned about due to the lack of vents at the back.
  • These lack of vents has proved good when rain has been lashing horizonatally at me!
  • The fit is nice, not restrictive in any way, thanks to the slight stretch of the fabric. It works well with my race vest too.
  • There’s no concern over bulk or weight, it’s really light!
  • I love the cuffs which cover the back of my hand but are elasticated on the inner side.
  • The hood worksand adjusts well, it has a small visor but – as I wear glasses - I still wear the Montane Cetus cap which works perfectly with the hood. When the hood is down there's no flapping around, you don't notice it.
  • The jacket has an incredibly light feel to wear
  • Fit was good with the part-elasticated, shaped cuffs, snug but not tight
  • Hood doesn’t flap around when not in use, and is incredibly cosy when in use. With 3 points of adjustment, pulled close with the hood drawstrings

Verdict

Montane, a proud British brand, has long had a reputation for producing high quality, lightweight running and trail products. I love their sustainability focus - they are always looking to tweak things with that in mind, and they offer a full repair service. This new imagining of their popular Minimus Lite Jacket certainly lives up to that reputation. Simply put: one of the best lightweight waterproof jackets on the market for sure and at a budget price. It comes highly recommended for anyone just wanting to keep dry on a short early morning run, or a long ultra-distance trail race, or mountain marathon in the most inclement conditions.
