Pros

  • Gently separates the big toe, encouraging better alignment whilst protecting the second toe from pressure from the big toe.
  • The split toe design is effective without being intrusive – it doesn’t irritate the join between your toes. It gently but effectively trains your big toe a little straighter.
  • This, plus the padding around the bunion joint, naturally helps relieve pain from Hallux Valgus symptoms.
  • Compression around the midfoot is noticeable but comfortable and helps support the arch which is so often under pressure if you suffer from bunions.
  • The silver ion technology means you don’t have to wash after every use – though we’d still encourage it, especially in warmer weather.
  • The high Lycra content means the socks stay in place

Cons(iderations)

  • You won’t necessarily have a neat fit at the end of the toes – longer toes will fit to the end, shorter ones will have a little bit of room. I have short toes and this hasn’t annoyed me at all, it would only be irritating if my running shoes were too small.

In Testing

When our accessories buyer gave me a pair of these socks to try, I was sceptical – how much difference could a pair of socks make to the pain in my second toe? Well, it turns out a lot!

Due to a modest bend in my big toe and a slight bunion, I’ve had to use the (excellent) Sidas Gel Toe Wraps on my second toe to prevent it from going numb when running. These socks protect my toe even better, I noticed my big toe sat a little straighter and I got zero pain in my toes. I’m now wearing them for every long run I do.

Another colleague who suffers from bunion pain also reported relief from these socks. They fit very well, are as moisture-wicking as my beloved Stance socks, and the support around my arch feels nice too.

Verdict

If you’ve got an issue with your big toe pressing into your second, these will be transformative. If you’ve got pain in your big toe joint, these will bring relief as you exercise. If Hallux Valgus symptoms are causing you pain and making exercise harder, please give these socks a try – they could bring you the blessed relief they’ve brought me.
