JOIN NOWWith running being such a high-impact sport, shin splints are a common problem for a lot of runners – in fact, many runners suffer with shin splints at some point during their running life. It manifest in a mild version that may just go away as easily as it has arrived with simple self-treatment or rest. More acute cases, if left alone, can lead to a more serious injury and involve a longer lay-off. As with any injury, if you feel it has reached a level where running is uncomfortable or just not possible, we would always recommend seeking advice from a competent physio or medical professional to get an accurate diagnosis. Read more for great tips on Shin Splints and Running.
Very often, replacing your running shoes can really help with shin splints. The cushioning on your current running trainers may have compressed and no longer absorb any impact. Having the right support in your trainers is also very important. Depending on your foot strike – whether you have a neutral gait, supinate or overpronate – your running trainers should be offering you the right level of support.
If you are unsure of which level of support is right for you, consider a Natural Gait Analysis at our store in London. We supply a huge selection of running trainers suitable for everyone. You will then be able to find a trainer catered specifically for you.
Selecting a cushioned or supportive footwear can effectively prevent and manage shin splints. The added cushioning can help reduce the impact on your legs, minimising the risk of developing shin splints. Ensure the footwear fits your foot well to provide optimum support. As a result, your feet and legs won't be overworked and will stay comfortable, allowing you to perform physical activities while avoiding the stress and discomfort associated with shin splints.
There is no such thing as the PERFECT trainer to defeat shin splints. That would be the dream! Nonetheless, depending on what is causing the shin pain, your trainers can make the world of difference. So, if you are experiencing shin splints, look into replacing your trainers, we have compiled the running shoes most likely to help you keep on running!
Neutral Shoes / Stability Shoes / Cushioned Shoes / Supinator Shoes / Trail Shoes
This lovely neutral road running shoe from New Balance has a smooth ride. The Fresh Foam X cushioning protects against impact forces without being overly soft. This is a great shoe for those who don’t like squidgy (descriptive rather than scientific!) cushioning and want a responsiveness that helps support pace. The flex points are so perfect that you glide through each stride; the smoother your stride the less impact goes up into your legs. The heel-toe difference has been reduced to 6mm, encouraging less heavy heel striking, more mid-foot. The width options are useful too.
What we love about Brooks' ever popular Ghost, now turning 17, is that it's a well-cushioned neutral road-shoe that holds your feet so well and guides you through each stride. Brooks have added 3mm extra to the forefoot and 1mm in the heel, for not only a softer feel but also a 10mm offset, which is generally better for us than a stacked 12mm. There's also a new upper with a luxurious fit around the heel. If you want a shoe that will never let you down, carrying you safely through mile after mile, Ghost 17 is it.
If you overpronate, having a shoe that aligns you into a neutral running position can alleviate shin pain. Hoka's Arahi 8 gives excellent support in two ways. A wide platform under the arch gives a stable base to the foot. The innovative H-Frame is a slightly firmer density insert running long the medial (inner) side of the foot and then encircling the ankle, giving maximum support for overpronation. The all-new dual-density midsole is softer than before, and features an additional 3mm of cushioning in the heel for a plush ride. The Arahi has the typical wider Hoka base outsole, which provides extra stability on landing, making this shoe both supportive and stabilising. It also comes in a wide fitting if you have a broader foot.
The Saucony Hurricane 25 is a high-performance stability running-shoe designed to provide maximum support, cushioning and comfort. It features Center Path technology to assist with overpronation, for a smooth and stable ride. This latest version is lighter, softer and more secure around the heel, for increased comfort and support.
Always a popular shoe, the Glycerin GTS just got even plusher. This is Brooks’ supportive road shoe with a new DNA-Tuned midsole. The foam cushioning has large nitrogen-infused cells in the heel for a super-soft feel. The smaller cells in the forefoot are more responsive and help spring you through to the next stride. The GuideRails support your running gait beautifully. Meanwhile the wrap knit upper is soft and breathable, holding your feet very comfortably. If you want the miles to float away beneath you, getting in all that training you’ve got planned, this could be the shoe for you!

The Adrenaline GTS is rightly one of the most relied upon stability shoes on the market. The support features effective pronation control and the DNA LOFT v3 midsole gives a great cushioned ride. The GuideRails technology also helps to prevent your ankle from rolling outwards, reducing supination.
The Asics Gel Cumulus, neutral road-running shoe, has been revamped with PureGel technology that's 65% softer than previous versions. The FF Blast+ foam also has built-in shock-absorption properties, which help to reduce the impact on your feet whilst running. The new engineered-mesh upper provides a balanced mix of comfort and breathability. More recycled plastic has been utilised in the latest version, making it an eco-friendly option.
Designed for performance and comfort, these lightweight shoes feature a breathable mesh upper and responsive cushioning that adapts to your stride, ensuring maximum support mile after mile. With eco-friendly materials and sleek design, you won’t just feel good; you’ll look great too! Whether you're a seasoned marathoner or a casual jogger, the Hylo Athletics Impact is your ultimate partner for conquering the pavement. Step into your next run with confidence and style.
The On Cloudmonster is your maximum cushioned, neutral-gait, protective training shoe for packing in those miles. The CloudTec®, inspired by marshmallow-like clouds, is designed to deliver unparalleled cushioning and a soft landing. The new dual-density Helion™ superfoam provides bounce and responsiveness. So you get a luscious blend of plush, soft feel underfoot combined with exceptional energy-return and rebound.
The Hoka Bondi 9 is designed for those neutral runners seeking maximum cushioning and comfort. Featuring a lightweight, breathable upper constructed from engineered mesh, it promotes airflow while ensuring a secure fit. The shoe boasts an advanced EVA foam midsole that enhances shock absorption, offering a plush ride without sacrificing responsiveness. The unique Meta-Rocker technology aids in smooth transitions from heel to toe, making it perfect for long-distance running. Its full-complement rubber outsole provides durable traction on various surfaces, while the wide base enhances stability. Ideal for runners of all levels.
Elevate your trail running experience with the Salomon S/Lab Ultra Glide shoes, expertly crafted for those who dare to go further. Designed for long-distance comfort, these lightweight and breathable shoes feature an innovative cushioning system that absorbs impact while offering exceptional energy return. With aggressive traction for unpredictable terrains and a sleek, adaptive fit that enhances stabilit.
The Hoka Speedgoat is a high-performance all-round trail shoe – great grip, exceptional comfort and stability. The midsole is updated with a new foam to make it lightweight as well as responsive. It's a favourite among trail runners, including those participating in ultra-distance events.
The Caldera features Brooks’ signature DNA LOFT V3 foam, providing exceptional shock-absorption. This helps reduce the impact on your shins, making it an ideal choice for those prone to shin splints. The engineered-mesh upper ensures breathability and a secure fit, while the rugged outsole grips effortlessly on various surfaces, delivering confidence on every run. Embrace the trails with comfort and support – your legs will thank you!
Your running trainers can make a lot of difference when it comes to shin splints. If you do find yourself suffering with shin pain, check your trainers for too much wear or compressed cushioning, which won’t be absorbing the shock from impact. It is also important to make sure that what you’re running in is suitably supportive – that is where Natural Gait Analysis comes in!
Of course, it would be best to try and avoid injury as much as possible. Stay true to your rest days, stretch whenever possible, and (perhaps the most important one) make sure your trainers are properly fitted, suitable to your running style and terrain, and preventing pronation. These will help avoid shin splints altogether!

What’s the difference between Hoka Arahi and Gaviota. Needing extra cushioning I switched from ASICS to Hoka Bondi (at your London shop) but they did not give me the support I needed so started with the Gaviota, which I have now used for many years. Your article doesn’t mention the Gaviota but highlights the Arahi for support. I run marathons and ultras. Please advise. Thank you ReplyNandanti MartaskovaSeptember 22, 2021 at 4:52pm
Hi Brian,
Thank you for your comment.
The main difference between them is that the Gaviota features more cushioning and support than the Arahi. I would suggest you try both shoes on and see which one works for you better. If you pop to our store we can check your gait and suggest which works better for your feet.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything else I can do for you.
Kind regards, Nandanti

We have three stores - in London, in Edinburgh and in Cardiff. If you are unable to visit our London store, which would be the closest store to you, we do offer Online Gait Analysis where a member of our London team analyses your gait virtually and gets in contact with you to discuss options for suitable shoes.
Please let me know if I can help further.
Kind regards,
