Windproof Running Jackets

Windproof jackets are very lightweight and easy to pack away, suitable for windy but not very wet weather. They offer some rain protection but in consistent or heavy rain you’ll get wet. Some are very highly water repellent though, and a bit more breathable in comparison to the fully waterproof ones.

Either way, the wind protection means you won't get too cold, except in really miserable weather! In winter, just add a moisture-wicking baselayer, or warmer thermal, and you'll be perfectly set up for your training.

Waterproof Running Jackets

These have taped seams, making them fully waterproof and suitable for extreme weather conditions. While they’ll never feel as breathable as a water-resistant jacket, they are still very lightweight, the fabric is as breathable as possible, and they offer a choice of features for increased ventilation. If you look after your jacket, it should last you for years.

If you particularly feel the cold, or you're going to be out for a long time – especially out on the trails, where you're more exposed to the elements – a waterproof is well worth the investment.
Some runners overheat more than others, some don't mind getting a bit wet, and others won't go out in the rain anyway – if that's you, consider a windproof.
