Features

Upper

The stitched seams are almost non-existent, providing a clean and sophisticated look
Welded heat sealing around the improved protective toe box provides great security, as is the seam-free midfoot side strapping.
Previously too narrow for some, the wide version provides a better fit while maintaining its snug midfoot feel. It now seems to have a deeper and higher volume toe box.

Midsole

Salomon's own cushioning, EnergyCell, makes this a great shoe for miles and miles of off-road trails. The heel has a more stable and supportive cradle.

Outsole

The Contagrip rubber compound is perfect on dry and wet surfaces. Although you can never be too sure, it seems to be absolutely fine on wet rock too.
The lugs, like the previous Speedcross editions, are forward facing at the front and back of the heel, providing excellent grip, both uphill and downhill.

Cons

With a 10mm heel drop, it is a little high at the ankle for some runners who enjoy that low profile, close to the ground feel

In Testing

This shoe works on many surfaces. It works on hard farm areas and forest trails because of the cushioning, but works the same away with less treacherous terrains and grassy hillsides. A great all rounder and the availability in the wider width option too, is a real plus for many of our customers.

Verdict

The Speedcross has been a popular shoe with trail runners for several years. The latest updates on the 6th version are all positive. Deep lugs, improved forefoot volume, seamless upper, increased heel stability are things most trail runners will finds a plus. If you have loved previous versions from this brand, you should love this one. If you have never worn a pair of trail shoes from Salomon, put it in the mix next time you are looking to replace your trail shoes.
