Running legend Ron Hill visited our Edinburgh store for a lunchtime run on Thursday 20th October. Ron, former Olympian, Commonwealth and European marathon champion and arguably Britain's greatest marathon runner was also keeping up his remarkable schedule of having run every day since Dec 20th 1964 — an incredible streak spanning over 45 years without a missed day of running. If you've ever tried running every day for a week; month or year you'll know how hard it is – things happen! Things happen to Ron, but he has always stuck to his goal and gone for a run regardless. An enthusiastic group of friends and customers of all ages, Run and Become staff, plus Ron and Andy Norman – Ron Hill's sales Northern Sales manager – set off on a leisurely 5km lunchtime loop. After negotiating the Haymarket tram works they headed for Roseburn and onto the Water of Leith Walkway, below the Gallery of Modern art and onto the Dean Village, before heading back up to Haymarket
Afterwards everyone tucked into soup, bread, quiche and, of course, chocolate rolls, while chatting away to Ron, who recounted tales of his training. Local physio Guy Van Herp, was fascinated to hear how Ron kept his long daily running streak going despite the obvious occasional injury that intense marathon training brings. Former Bolton Harriers clubmate, Graham Bennison of Fife AC, turned up kitted out in his Bolton vest and tracksuit. Finally, a special mention to Jenny Hastings who came along specially to meet Ron. Jenny has run for over 330 days and is aiming to run every day for a year – who knows she may keep on going! Read more in this article at Fiona Outdoors.
